Shishi Odoshi

Translated as “deer-scarer,” the traditional shishi odoshi were designed to do just that - frighten deer and wild boar away from agriculture.

A wide bamboo spout is balanced across a smaller base, resting on its heavier end, while a smaller spout gently fills it with water. When the spout is full, it tips forward to dump out the water, then slowly rocks back to its starting position. This produces a soft clacking sound, which is what scares the animals away.
